RECLAIMED FURNITURE DESIGN/BUILD WORKSHOP AT YESTERMORROW

My shopmate Jesse (www.hookerandco.com) and I will be teaching a reclaimed design/build intensive starting this weekend (November 13th 2011).

Here is the description for the Yestermorrow site:  Using reclaimed or salvaged materials speaks to both the ecological and creative realms. By re-using materials, we are fostering a sustainable design/build ethic. At the same time, our creative inclinations are challenged and new opportunities arise when we are restricted by the materials at hand. In this class students will create a small-scale furniture piece constructed with reclaimed, salvaged, and/or found materials. Students will explore the design process in full, gathering inspiration from the available materials, while contemplating unique or unusual uses they might offer. The class will then move into build mode, four-squaring and milling boards, learning joinery and fastening techniques, and exploring the potential tactile relationships between apparently disparate objects. Students are encouraged to bring their own project ideas and materials to class. The instructors will also bring softwood beams and various oddities reclaimed from sites throughout Brooklyn.

New joinery class at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn, NY (DEC 19-22, 2011)

INTRODUCTION TO HAND JOINERY

This four day intensive will give you an overview of foundational hand cut joinery and a chance to practice it on a project.  Layout and execution will be done with tools that have been in existence for centuries. We will start with the mortise and tenon joint, and follow it up with a few iteration of dovetails.

While laying out and conceptualizing these joints we will also go over consistent and accurate layout techniques.  Utilizing these joints you will create a small tool box (a safe home for your sharp chisels and accurate layout tools).  Class time will be divided between demos, practice joints, and the tool box project. Even if you don't cut another mortise, tenon, or dovetail by hand after this class; the skills and techniques covered, are applicable in most future woodworking endeavors.

This class is appropriate for beginners or intermediates looking to hone their hand joinery skills.  We'll take a 30 minute lunch break and recommend bringing a prepackaged meal.  Participants will be expected to bring an accurate 12" combo square (a high quality brand such as Starrett or Moore & Wright is essential).  All other tools and materials will be provided.  Students may purchase a 12" Starret combo square with their class enrollment!

Instructor:
